Earthquake · 地震
2024年1月1日、能登半島でマグニチュード7.6の地震が発生した。
The earthquake caused approximately 489 deaths, over 1,400 injuries, and damage to more than 204,000 structures. The earthquake unleashed a cascade of secondary disasters — ground upheaval that left fishing ports high and dry, coastal extension of up to 250 meters, tsunamis along the Sea of Japan coast, nearly 1,000 landslides in the first month, and fires that destroyed Wajima's Asaichi morning market, a living institution for over 1,000 years.
その地震により約489人が死亡し、1,400人以上が負傷、20万4,000棟以上の建物が被害を受けました。また、一連の二次災害も発生しました。陸地が隆起して漁港が干上がり、海岸線は最大で250メートルも後退し、日本海沿岸には津波が押し寄せ、最初の1か月でほぼ1,000件の地すべりが起こり、千年以上の歴史を持つ輪島の朝市も火災で焼失しました。

The Wajima Now framework is built from what makes Noto irreplaceable — its lacquerware tradition, its morning market, its Kiriko Festival.
輪島ナウのフレームワークは、能登を特別なものにしているものから作られているんだ — 漆器の伝統、朝市、キリコ祭りだよ。
輪島塗 — 1,200年の漆芸
One hundred and twenty individual stages of lacquer, passed hand to hand for twelve centuries. Wajima-nuri is not a product — it is a spatial and social system.
漆の百二十の工程が、十二世紀にわたり手から手へと受け継がれてきた。輪島塗は単なる製品ではなく、空間的かつ社会的なシステムである。
朝市 — 千年の市
The Asaichi opened every morning along 360 metres of the city center — rain, winter, festival, or ordinary Tuesday. It was the structure around which Wajima organised itself.
朝市は、雨の日も、冬も、祭りの日も、何でもない火曜日も、街の中心の360メートルにわたって毎朝開かれていた。輪島という街は、その市を軸にして自らを組み立てていた。
キリコ祭り
Over 200 celebrations across the Noto Peninsula. Communities carry towering illuminated Kiriko floats that reach 15 metres tall — the festival is civic identity made physical.
能登半島では200以上の祭りが行われています。地域の人々は高さ15メートルに達する巨大な照明付きキリコ山車を担ぎます — この祭りは市民のアイデンティティが形となったものです。

記憶の仕事としての建築
Wajima Now is the urban architecture framework commissioned by Ishikawa Prefecture to guide the city's recovery. It rejects two easy responses to disaster: the blank-slate redevelopment and the nostalgic replica.
Instead, the framework reads the existing urban grain — recovering spatial hierarchies, honouring the craft district, and introducing structural performance where the old fabric was most vulnerable.

既存の街並みを敬う
The framework reads Wajima's historic urban grain — recovering spatial hierarchies, alleyways, and plot divisions that encode centuries of social life.
このフレームワークは、輪島の歴史的な都市の粒状性を読み取り、何世紀にもわたる社会生活を記録する空間の階層構造、路地、区画の分割を回復します。
工芸地区を称える
The lacquerware district, the fishing harbour, the morning market corridor — each zone carries distinct material culture that recovery must protect and amplify.
漆器地区、漁港、朝市の通り――それぞれのゾーンには、それぞれ異なる物質文化があり、その回復はそれを保護し増幅しなければならない。
強靭性のために建てる
New structures introduce seismic performance and flood resilience where the historic fabric was most vulnerable, without erasing the typologies that define the city.
新しい建造物は、都市を特徴づける典型的な形態を消すことなく、歴史的構造が最も脆弱であった場所に地震への耐性と洪水への強靭性を導入します。
